The Socialist International Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean, meeting in Managua, Nicaragua, on 9-10 October 2006,

D E C L A R E S its unwavering commitment to continue its efforts until every country in Latin America and the Caribbean benefits from democratic, representative, pluralist and participatory political systems, which guarantee the freedom of all those taking part in them and their full political, economic, social and cultural rights.

R E I T E R A T E S the interest it holds in contributing to achieving the greatest levels of economic growth with equity in all the countries of the region, in order to overcome poverty and make solid gains in improving the living standards of the people.

E X P R E S S E S its concern at the indifference shown by the multilateral bodies in relation to the growing inequality which affects most of the countries in the region, to the deterioration in working, health, education and living conditions of its peoples, and to the abandonment of farmers, country workers and agricultural development.

W E L C O M E S warmly and joins in the invitation made by the Democratic Revolutionary Party, PRD, of Panama and the Puerto Rican Independence Party, PIP, to all the member parties to take part in the Latin American and Caribbean Congress for the Independence of Puerto Rico, which will be held on 18-19 November in Panama City.

The Committee R E I T E R A T E S that it will remain alert and active in its aim to establish policies and strategies to deepen democracy in the region and to prioritise overcoming the social deficit which affects it. Democracy must show its greatest effectiveness in combating such enormous social problems as poverty, exclusion, hunger, unemployment and other phenomena which have come to characterise the social tragedy in the region. To achieve this end, it is essential to restore the confidence which has been lost in the political process, through effective proposals and initiatives whose scope goes beyond focusing purely on macroeconomic variables, ignoring the social objectives.

E X P R E S S E S its active and enthusiastic solidarity with the Sandinista National Liberation Front, FSLN, and its candidate Daniel Ortega in the electoral process which culminates on 5 November, in which he has presented a successful call for national unity and has put forward a realistic and hopeful programme to resume the battle against poverty in Nicaragua.
